Outlines the guidelines that all tenants must follow.
Behaviour
Tenants should never be rude, offensive, aggressive or threatening to others.
Bonfires
Bonfires may be lit only on Saturdays and Wednesdays of each week if:-
a) Only dry organic material that is a waste product from your allotment is burnt. It is against the law to burn plastics, rubber and other oil based products;
b) Any bonfire giving out dense smoke for more than a few minutes should be doused with soil or water;
c) Lighting a fire on damp windless days or evenings is avoided as smoke will hang in the air;
d) No fire is left unattended;
e) Smoke is not allowed to drift across the highway.
f) Smoke must not be allowed to drift towards nearest houses
g) Fires must be extinguished by 1200 hrs
Dogs
a) Dogs must be kept on leads and kept under control.
b) Dog excrement must be removed by the owner.
Livestock
The keeping of bees, pigeons and poultry are only permitted after a special application to the committee (which will consult with the Council) and specific conditions may be imposed.
Water
a) Hand-held hoses are allowed. Sprinklers and irrigation systems are banned.
b) Car washing is banned.
c) We need to use water wisely to protect our environment.
d) Do not forget we are all on a water-meter.
Structures
Plot holders are responsible for keeping any structures safe and well maintained:-
a) Do not use glass in any new structure as broken glass in the soil is painful and unsafe, the committee can advise and help purchase suitable alternatives.
b) Fruit Cages are temporary and do not need permission.
c) Poly Tunnels already in place are accepted as being permitted.
d) Plot holders using poly tunnels will be asked to collect rainwater for use within the poly tunnel if not already doing so.
e) Any new poly tunnel should be no more than 25 feet X 12 feet and rainwater must be collected for watering within the tunnel.
f) If considered necessary a supplementary water charge will be made.
g) Any structure that was built before these rules were issued can remain provided it is safe.
h) You need permission to erect a new green house.
Equipment and tools
Don’t use any power tools eg. strimmers without the proper safety equipment eg. goggles, ear defenders, gloves and steel toecaps if using a blade. Training is recommended before using a bladed strimmer. Do not strim near any one else because of flying debris. Tools should be locked away after use. Coil hoses to avoid trip hazards.
Make certain that there are no sharp edges eg. rusty corrugated iron and that all spike and cane ends are covered.
Chemicals
We need to protect our environment and these should only be used as a last resort.
Only weed killers and pesticides and other garden chemicals bought at a normal retail outlet and intended for normal domestic use may be used and strictly in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.
Extreme care should be taken to keep spray drift of chemicals within your own plot.
Chemicals intended for commercial use by professionals, may not be used by any plot holder who is not a qualified person holding the appropriate certificate. Chemicals must be locked up and stored out of reach of children. Check that old chemicals are still allowed. Dispose of old chemicals and their containers safely. Never decant chemicals into any other container.
Water butts
Water butts must be securely covered as these can present a risk of drowning particularly to children.
Dumping
Please do not use your plot as a dumping ground for unwanted items and waste e.g asbestos, builder’s rubble, sanitary ware, broken wheel barrows and old window frames.
Your Responsibility
If you choose to ignore the health and safety advice contained in the rules and guidelines and an accident occurs on your plot then it becomes your responsibility.
Ask the committee if in any doubt as they can guide you to the correct source of information.
Observation of non-compliance
If you observe non -compliance with the rules this should be reported to a member of the committee.
The rules are here to help you
The rules should help to protect the vast majority of good plot holders.
